Book The Life of Abraham Lincoln: Vol. I: Drawn from Original Sources and Containing Many Speeches, Letters and Telegrams Review :

Ida Tarbell was called a 'muckraker' (I think Teddy Roosevelt invited -- or popularized -- the term) which , incorrectly, suggests something shabby or sensationalist. In fact she was one of the first investigative journalists, and a smooth, effective writer. But she first gained some fame for the Life of Lincoln. This is a lovely book, It is hagiographic...it is intended to exalt Lincoln rather than be critical or complete. It is full of stories and reminiscences that were generally positive and personal. More critical writers in other books cast doubt on the full truth of some of the people quoted here, but so long as you don't assume this is a a complete history, it doesn't matter. It is very well put together, reads easily and is a good add to shelves full of more thorough "lifes". There are always attributions, giving credit to Ms. Tarbell's reporterly accuracy. Volume 2 finishes the Lincoln's life about halfway through the book, then adds Lincoln speeches and presentations in full. I believe these books were part of the beginning of Lincoln veneration. His assassination did not immediately cause him to be rated our best president. That took more time and books like this one (written I thin around 1898 or so). I am in the front row of Lincoln fans, and enjoy the more personal view these books evoke. Highly recommended for the rest of my tribe of Lincoln admirers.
Ms. Tarbell is obviously an adoring fan (but aren't so many of us) and if you can look past that she has otherwise turned her sharp research skills into a thoroughly enjoyable read of Mr. L's skills up through the 1860 election. And unless you are at least an amateur Lincoln scholar and will relish reading through all the "previously undiscovered" Lincoln writings and speeches (as I did) which comprise half of Volume II of Ida's "Life"...you can skip that volume.
