Being someone who has read many books on Abraham and Mary Lincoln, this on left me disappointed. The writer relied on Lincoln's law partner, Herndon, for many of his facts about Mary, which has mostly been laugh at a being untrue. For a man who never step foot in Lincoln's home, think he knows what goes on in their home. How can this man know which knife Lincoln used to butter his bread with. I believe nothing that Herndon ever wrote about the Lincolns. But in order to sale a book this writers continue to use Herdon as a sourse. In his landmark 19th century biography of Abraham Lincoln, William Herndon asserted that his former law partner was in a loveless marriage with Mary Todd. According to Herndon Lincoln only ever loved a young woman named Ann Rutledge, to whom he was briefly engaged to marry before Ann died tragically young during his time in New Salem.It is very easy-understandable even- to idealize a first love. Especially if that first love has died young. You will only ever afterward view that person through the rosy prism of idealism, youth and hope. You will never experience a real flesh and blood marriage with its disappointments, it's struggles, it's inevitable disillusionments. The idealized lost love will be frozen in time. Forever young, forever spotless.Kenneth Winkle is my favorite type of author. He writes with balance, fairness and compassion for his subjects. The Lincoln marital relationship is presented in all it's complexity. It was neither a marriage of convenience nor the great love story to end all others. It was the difficult, troubled union of a man and a woman forging a life together during the most intense period of American history. Abe Lincoln and Mary Todd were in the trenches together, so to speak. They saw and knew one another at their best-and at their absolute worst. They fought together, raised children and loved them, and watched them die. And finally they endured the fiery trial that was the Civil War White House...together.They irritated one another, fretted and worried over one another, and in the end loved one another the way only REAL men and women can-not like the impossibly idealized lovers of Herndon's imagination.Winkle utilizes contemporary sources, eyewitnesses who observed the couple up close and in their home(a place Lincoln's law partner Herndon was never invited).I checked this book from the local library and found it so engaging I was able to finish it in one sitting.If you have never read anything about the Lincolns, start with this compact little book and then move on to Daniel Mark Epstein's "Abraham and Mary Lincoln: Portrait of a Marriage" which I also recommend highly.
